1973- When Everything Started:
The Incorporation of Credo

It was an audacious leap of faith into the unknown, chartered by a Catholic priest and a mom who sought help and compassion for her drug-addicted son, but they proceeded boldly with a set of beliefs and aims – a credo- to guide them. At first, Credo had to prove its worth, facing roadblocks ranging from a lack of public acceptance to funding.

1977- The Incorporation of TLS

Transitional Living Services of Northern New York established residential services for individuals in need of psychiatric, rehabilitative support who were unable to live independently in the community.  The organization’s primary goal was to assist people to live in the least restrictive setting possible

1988- Credo’s First Executive Director

It was decided that Credo needed an Executive Director to oversee the programs. That year, James P. Scordo was named to the post.

2000’s- First Merge

Mr. Scordo helped guide a merger with the former Community Center for Alcoholism and Substance Abuse.

2019- Second Executive Director

Mr. Scordo retired and Credo named it’s second Executive Director, John C. Wilson, an individual with over 20 years of service at Credo.

Beginning 2021 – Merger Discussions

Credo and Transitional Living Services began to discuss opportunities for collaboration that would strengthen service delivery and ensure the sustainability of robust treatment options for individuals in Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence Counties. With support from the New York State Office of Mental Health, the New York State Office of Addiction Supports and Services, our local government unit, and both boards of directors, Credo and Transitional Living Services moved to a more formal exploration of a merger.

2024 – Credo & TLS Merge under THRIVE Wellness and Recovery

In 2023, 50 years later, Credo Community Center for the Treatment of Addictions, Inc. reached it’s half-century milestone mainly because of a simple yet profound philosophy:

“Any individual needing and wanting treatment for substance use or mental illness deserves to have the opportunity.”

The agency has provided outpatient services including:

The collaborative vision from 2021 became a reality this year. Together, we are creating synergies for the delivery of high-quality, cost-effective treatment to children, adolescents, and adults with mental illness and/or substance use disorders and/or opioid use disorders.

Collectively, 96 years of providing mental health and substance use services has been provided by Credo and Transitional Living Services

The path has included helping others not only survive, but regain their lives in a meaningful, person-centered manner so they can THRIVE.
